Apologies for the poor contrast. I've been looking on the web for some quick fix but have yet to find one. The high contast app I use works great -- except for the pencil writing!
But I was able to gain some improvement by uploading the photo to Google Docs and then tweaking the contrast. Here is a sample.

In any case, I leave to you the task of sharpening bad images in the event you wish to see something more legible.
